Christina is a single parent of two special needs children. Her daughter Kayla has ADHD and her son Colin has Chiari Syndrome and a heart malformation. After Colin was born, the doctors told Christina she should stay home with him due to his complex medical condition. Christina left a job in banking and chose to do childcare in her apartment in order to stay home with her son and also meet her family’s economic needs. The family has always lived on limited resources, but recently her payments for doing childcare have been reduced, Colin’s father lost his job and therefore pays no child support and does little to help the family, and due to an error in childcare billing and the loss of the child support income, the family now owes $1,000 in late fees and back rent on their apartment. She does not receive public housing, as she cannot run a childcare business out of her home living in public housing. She is on the waitlist for Section 8 but in the Portland area that is 3-4 years long. She pays $725 a month in rent and lives on a very modest income which she makes last, but given the circumstances she has experienced this year, the family is facing homelessness and eviction from their apartment. Christina is using every possible resource to help prevent homelessness for her family and by doing so, she has no way of paying for any holiday gifts or purchasing new clothes or shoes for her children. She herself does not have a coat, but only a hooded sweatshirt to wear when it is cold outside. Christina does not like to ask for help but would be very grateful for any assistance for her children or to help with the cost of food, utilities or to make a dent in her rental late fees.
